I know the current situation will be more difficult for the gregarious ones amongst you, but even if we enjoy “wandering lonely as a cloud” we are limited to doing so in our own minds at the moment.

I am here to find out how I might serve you in the days to come.   Those of you who know me, know that I am all about finding ways to make the best of any situation, preventing unhelpful thoughts ruling you, and turning to the useful thoughts which support your well-being.

Yes, this is a very difficult time for many, but a good time for collecting (useful) thoughts, appreciating the everyday; enjoying activities and self-care that usually get lost in the rush, and for me, writing undistracted by the normal external routines, responsibilities and social delights.

I woke up with a Wordsworth poem in mind in the first lockdown which I learned by heart years ago and speaks to me still:

Nuns fret not at their convent’s narrow room;
And hermits are contented with their cells;
And students with their pensive citadels;
Maids at the wheel, the weaver at his loom,
Sit blithe and happy; bees that soar for bloom,
High as the highest Peak of Furness-fells,

It is important not to get complacent and throw caution to the wind, but reading about the plagues of the past, they burnt themselves out after a year or two, with little or no knowledge of prevention or cure.  so in spite of the uncertainty, this will end.  It is well-known in the psychology world that the media thrive on the worst scenarios, at all times, with the knowledge that our brains are designed to pay more attention to bad news than good…
When anxiety rises, I take time out from media news, and also switch channels in my mind.  I show clients how to do this too.   read more

Now is another opportunity to clear out the clutter – both physically and mentally.  I tend to hoard information in case I need it later, and usually consider clearing it out as a chore, but it feels so good when the clutter is gone.  So I am clearing emails, recycling and shredding a humongous amount of paper in my files collected over 30 years or so…and then I take a break and play.

I have a special system – I call it the 80% strategy – for breaking down a project into step-by-step manageable chunks, so you get a feeling of accomplishment at every stage even while it is still a work in progress.  The brain likes these little hits of dopamine. You can use this strategy on any project large or small.  I share it with clients verbally but have not written it down.  Let me know if you would like to have it and I will create a template and send it to you.

As a happy-to-be introvert I can make the best of this situation by treating it as something of a retreat.  Relieved from many external pressures, I can reflect and course-correct on where I want to take my coaching business, value the solitude and enjoy what life is in this moment.

Where would we be without internet connection?  I am glad that I developed a successful phone and online arm to my business – although it does not feel remote at all.   Those of you working with me know this.
